Choosing The Right Margarita Maker For You

Have you ever thought of buying your own margarita mixer? Whether you are a lover of margarita or any other cocktail for that matter, this thought will always cross you mind at least once. You would think it is a good investment, because you would no longer have to get out in the middle of the night when you feel like getting a drink. All that you need is to have the ingredient at hand and a reliable mixer to pair it with.

Much like everything else that you decide to buy, there are several factors that you have to consider. For one, you need to think about our budget. And then there is also the issue about longevity. Which among those in the market will last you a lifetime’s worth of margarita?

Among all these factors, how does one go down to make a decision of which to buy? Here are some tips to help you decide:

  • First, remember that your budget should always be considered. It doesn’t matter how much money you have. You have to consider how much money you are willing to spend for a mixer. It the mixer costs more than half of your monthly electric bill, you might want to think twice. You don’t want to be over spending on something that is really not worth that much.
  • Second, consider the quality of the product. Will it last you a few good margaritas? Or will it be something you can pass on from one generation to another? If it is the latter, then you should definitely go for it. If it is the former, you might want to think twice about buying it at all.
  • Third, you should also choose what suits your personal taste. It is important that you consider which one you would really like to have. If you just settle on buying something, even if it is not what you want, then it wouldn’t be something that will make you happy.

All these factors may be simple considerations, but when you think about the bigger picture, each one makes total sense.

Fun Facts About The Margarita Cocktail

The margarita is considerably one of the most popular cocktails in the U.S.  It accounts to 18 percent of all cocktail drinks being sold in the U.S.  It is said that on average, 185,000 margaritas are consumed per hour by Americans.  Even though the margarita was invented in Mexico, it was invented by an American socialite named Margaret Sames.

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday celebrated in Mexico.  However, even though Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican celebration, the event is actually much bigger in the United States and is the day when most margaritas are consumed.  Margarita consumption is however highest on the south at Florida, North Carolina, Texas, and Alabama.

Tequila is a drink native to Mexico.  Despite this, the U.S. remains the number one market for tequila.  The reason is simple, the U.S. has three times the population as that of Mexico and is therefore a bigger market than that of Mexico itself.

The popularity of the margarita is not at all strange as the drink after all is simply amazing.  It is both light and refreshing and is the reason why it is the preferred drink of those who want to relax.  People going to vacations prefer this drink as it helps them greatly with the relaxing and refreshment part.  There are different spin-offs to the drink, but the classic still remains to be a favorite.

How to make the classic margarita cocktail:

  • 1 oz. Tequila
  • 1 oz. Cointreau
  • Fresh Lime Juice
  • Kosher Salt
  • Lime Wedge

The first thing to do when preparing a margarita is to rim your serving glass with salt.  Insert a lime wedge onto the rim of your serving glass and circle it around the rim to wet the rim with lime.  Dip the rim of the glass onto a saucer of salt.  Make sure not to have too much salt on the rim as this may create imbalance to the cocktail later on.  Just make sure that it is enough.

Once you have prepared the glass, it’s now time to prepare the cocktail.  Get a metal shaker, place some ice on it and then place all your liquids inside.  Cover the shaker and shake it vigorously, or if you have one, use your margarita maker (look here to see some of the best).  Stain the contents onto your salt-rimmed glass.  You can serve on the rocks if you want.  Add some garnish of lime wedges.  Enjoy.

The History Of The Margarita

Here is something to think about the next time you are getting ready to fire up your margarita machine.

The original margarita recipe is a summer time sensation concocted of a little folklore, a little urban legend, and a lot of well-intentioned tequila.  Although is history remains unclear, there is no dispute that it is THE world’s most popular tequila based cocktail.

Many have laid a claim to having invented the margarita recipe, but the truth, like a bad hangover,  is fuzzy at best.  Perhaps not knowing the exact history of the original margarita recipe makes for some interesting drunken bar room conversations among our fellow margarita connesuiers.  What is important however, is that all tales of its creation lead to the same basic frothy cocktail where good times are sure to ensue.

The question in my mind is not who really invented the margarita? The question is really: “Can I get another one? ”  For the curious minded, below are some theories and commonly repeated tales of the creators of the original margarita recipe:

Circa 1936: Danny Negrete

According to legend the Negrete brothers, Danny and David, ran the bar at the Garci Crispo hotel.  The day before Davids marriage, Danny mixed up this magical concoction as a wedding present to his soon to be sister-in-law, Margarita.  Thus becoming the namesake for the drink.

The drink was a simple combination of equal parts Tequila, Triple Sec, and Mexican lime juice served over crushed ice.

Circa 1938: Carlos Danny Herrera

In a little bar called Rancho La Gloria located somewhere between Tijuana and Rosarito Beach, Danny Herrera created his masterpiece.  As legend has it there was a showgirl and wannabe actress who went by the stage name Rita De La Rosa.  He birth name was Marjorie King and she was allergic to all types of liquor except tequila.  With a dislike of drinking it straight or even with a wedge of lime and shake of salt she asked the bartender to make her a drink she could palate. After some experimentation Danny came up with the perfect combination of sweet, salt, and citrus. Over shaved ice he poured a drink consisting of a jigger of silver tequila with lemon juice and Triple Sec.  Because of his fondness for Marjorie he affectionately named the drink “Margarita” the Spanish translation of Marjorie.

Circa 1942:  Francisco Pancho Morales

The location was Tommy’s Place – a bar in Juárez, Mexico.  Supposedly a patron ordered a magnolia cocktail (Cointreau, brandy, egg yolk and  a splash of champagne) but the bartender – Pancho Morales was not exactly up to speed on this particular recipe so he improvised and called his concoction “ A Daisy” which loosely translated is, you guessed it, “margarita”. It goes without saying that his ad-hoc creation was an instant hit.

Circa 1948: Margaret Sames

Perhaps the most well known claim behind the Margarita is attributed to Dallas socialite Margaret Sames.  While hosting a pool side Christmas party at her Acapulco vacation home she decided to liven things up with a party game.    After getting behind the bar and see what concoctions she could develop Margaret would let her party guests test and rate the results. Fortuitously she mixed two parts tequila with one part Cointreau and one part lime juice. Knowing that most people who drank tequila liked a quick hit of salt, she decided to add a garnish of rock salt around the rim of the glass.  Not only did her drink make a great conversation piece, but also it was damn tasty.  I think you know the rest of the story from here.

So how do we find out who really created the margarita?  Like I said earlier, the real question is not who created the margarita but rather “Can I get another one?”
